Back in 2012, seminal UK punk rock band Gallows found themselves without a label after a heated split from industry giants Warner Bros. Rather than go through the whole courting process again with prospective new partners, the band started their own record company, naming it Venn after a brainstorming session involving a lot of Venn diagrams (true story).
The ambiguous name reflects the ethos of the label: no genre of music is off the table. It wouldn't be unusual for Venn to drop an electronic album alongside an extreme metal LP, a folk record and a punk compilation. All that matters is that the artists are true to their craft and dare to challenge the status quo.
As well as being home to the next era of Gallows, Venn's early years provided a springboard for the likes of Marmozets, Tigercub, Heck (then Baby Godzilla), Grove Street Families and Milk Teeth. More recently, the label has released music by MOBO winners Bob Vylan, as well as Witch Fever, High Vis, CLT DRP, Static Dress, Meryl Streek, Jamie Bower and Wargasm.
Venn Records founder and Gallows guitarist Laurent 'Lags' Barnard has signed to two major labels as an artist, as well as releasing music through respected independent labels in the UK and internationally. The experience and relationships built over his years as a working musician have been invaluable in creating a genuinely artist-friendly record label.
